HA GIANG — It was 5pm and darkness was quickly approaching in the mountainous district of Vi Xuyen in northern Ha Giang Province. Lang Thi Huyet, a 24-year-old Tay ethnic minority woman, hurried to finish her working day so she could rush to her anti-illiteracy class in Thuan Hoa commune beginning at 7pm.
The topic in class that night was the question of why the illiteracy rate among local women was so high. That night, Huyet and her classmates learned that poverty, large families and a priority to send boys to school instead of girls were the reasons for the inequality.
The classes are organised and structured according to the needs of the people. The class teaches them what they want to know and what they consider most important. "For instance, if they want to plant corn, we will show them how to read and write the word corn, and then show them the best way to plant it, and then teach them the many kinds of corn," said Ta Van Tuan, AAV’s senior programme officer. "By doing this, teachers do not have a set cirriculum but instead base their lessons on what the people need."
She added that there were many difficulties, one of which was the fact that curricula hadn’t been compiled and the classroom was shared with the primary school. "However, it was all made worthwhile because my students, the youngest of whom is 15 and the oldest 50, are all so fond of their studies and they are all serious about learning how to read and write," she smiled.
