Mong mng giúp đỡ ạ! Is the weather changing? Have you noticed that nowadays the weather isn’t what it used to be? Do you have memories of cold winters, rainy springs and autumns and warm summers? Why isn’t it like that anymore? What has happened? I spoke to Maria from Athens and Russell from London and they told me about their experiences. Maria told me that over the previous year she had noticed rather strange weather in her country. She said a Mediterrranean climate is normally cool or cold in the winter and warm in the summer, but last year things were different. To begin with, the autumn had seemed quite normal, pleasant, mild weather, temperatures in the 20s and quite dry, but the problem was that the autumn never seemed to end. It went on and on and the temperature became almost tropical. Every morning there was mist, but not much rain fell. By December, there was no sign of morning frost or the usual occasional thunderstorm. In fact, temperatures remained high for that time of year. Throughout the months of the winter, no snow fell – in fact, there was not a snowflake to be seen. There were a couple of weeks of quite cold weather around Christmas, and that was it. Spring came early because temperatures were so high. Then suddenly in May, a time of year in Greece which is usually early summer, it started to pour with rain and it didn’t stop. It was the wettest May anybody remembered. Finally, there was an unforgettable summer of non-stop heat-waves, followed by catastrophic forest fires spread by extremely high winds. It was the hottest summer in Greece for a long time. Russell agreed with Maria that the weather had been strange. Although the autumn and winter had been quite cold in Britain compared to Greece, there had been very little rain. They didn’t have a cold period with some thick snow, but it was basically a mild winter for Britain. In fact, it was so mild that animals and plants were confused about what time of year it was. As a result, flowers blossomed early and baby animals were born early. However, after a dry winter, the strangest weather was still to come to Britain. The summer arrived but instead of mild days, Britain experienced terrible rains which flooded the country. In many towns the roads turned into rivers as the rain poured down for days and days. In the end, the rain lightened but it was certainly a rainy summer. There is a lot of talk about why the weather seems to have gone crazy, but the general agreement among experts is that it is our fault. We are destroying our environment in many different ways, and the pollution we are producing is causing what is called ‘The Greenhouse Effect’. This phenomenon is causing climate change and affecting the weather by making the world warmer. I think now it’s up to us to find a solution to this problem. 1- In the first paragraph, the writer says the weather nowadays ___________. A. has changed C. is never cold B. is rainy in spring D. is warm in autumn 2- How did Maria say the weather in Greece had changed? A. It had been cool in the summer. C. It was always windy. D. It was hotter than usual. 4- Russell said the British winter was__________. A. not as cold as in Greece C. like spring B. wetter than usual D. colder than usual 5- Why was the British summer unusual? A. The rivers were drier. C. There was more rain. B. The days were milder.
