Muong people, also known as Mol, Moan, Mual, are ethnic groups living in the midland and mountainous areas of Northern Vietnam. The Muong people are recognized as a member of the community of 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam
The Muong people speak the Muong language, the language belonging to the Viet-Muong group in the Vietnamese genus belonging to the Mon-Khmer language family of the South Asian language family.
Muong people are most concentrated in Hoa Binh province and mountainous districts of Thanh Hoa province. The Muong people have a very close relationship with the Kinh people. Linguists suggest that the Muong and the Kinh have a common origin as the ancient Vietnamese-Muong people.
