MIRROR IN THE SKY The Moon is closer to the earth than to the sun. It is closer to the earth than to some other stars. It moves around the earth and the earth moves around the sun. The moving of the moon around the earth makes the tides in our oceans go in and out. The full moon shines like a bright ball in the sky. But the moon does not give off any light of its own. It shines by reflecting the light it gets from the sun. If you hold up a mirror to the sun, the mirror catches the sunlight and shines. This is the way the moon shines. There are mountains and valleys on the moon, but there are no living things there.
