A letter of application is a sales letter in which you are both salesperson and product, for the purpose of an application is to attract an employer's attention and persuade him or her to grant you an interview. To do this, the letter presents what you can offer the employer, rather than what you want from the job.
Like a résumé, the letter of application is a sample of your work and an opportunity to demonstrate your skills and personality. If it is written with flair and understanding and prepared with professional care, it is likely to be very effective. While the résumé must be factual, objective, and brief, the letter is your chance to interpret and expand. It should state explicitly how your background relates to the specific job, and it should emphasise your strongest and most relevant characteristics. The letter should demonstrate that you know both yourself and the company.
The letter of application must communicate your ambition and enthusiasm. Yet it must be modest. It should be neither aggressive nor compliant: neither pat yourself on the back nor ask for sympathy. It should never express dissatisfaction with the present or former job or employer. And you should avoid discussing your reasons for leaving your last job.
Finally, it is best that you not broach the subject on salary. Indeed, even if a job advertisement requires that you mention your salary requirements, it is advisable simply to call them "negotiable." However, when you go on an interview, you should be prepared to mention a salary range. For this reason, you should investigate both your field and, if possible, the particular company. You don't want to ask for less than you deserve or more than is reasonable.

One of the most convenient and cheapest ways to see America is by riding a Greyhound bus. This interstate bus system connects all major cities in the United States providing them with frequent and convenient service. The bus system even has an international service which connects the Canadian cities of Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal to the Continental United States. At the southern border Greyhound also makes connection with cities in Mexico.
Its network even extends to some of the smaller towns and out-of-the-way communities in the great expanse of the country. Travelling by bus may take longer than flying by plane, but the terminals are located in the center of most cities and there is easy excess to the downtown areas. At night these terminals are carefully supervised and controlled by security guards so as to guarantee safety. If a person in the terminal cannot produce an ongoing ticker to another destination, he will be required to leave. The purpose of this policy is to safeguard the security of passengers and discourage beggars from loitering around the premises. Some terminals in major cities are opened around the clock, while others may close after midnight and open again in the morning.
Greyhound also offers a variety of discount fares for the cross-country travelers who may like to visit many places across the continent. For them there is the Ameripass. This pass is designed for budget travelers and can be a great saving over the regular fare. This pass can be purchased for period from as short as one week to as long as thirty days. It enables the traveler to visit any city along the Greyhound route within the purchased time limit. What is being purchased, therefore, is not distance but time.
These buses are comfortable and air-conditioned. They are all equipped with toilets in the rear to add to the convenience of the passengers but there are some very severe rules of conducts which are strictly enforced. On all buses smoking is prohibited and the consumption of alcoholic beverages is not allowed. For those passengers who use a pocket-sized stereo like a Walkman transistor for personal entertainment, the law requires that the volume be turned down so as not to disturb the other passengers.
The drivers are well-trained, very courteous and professional and always introduce themselves at the beginning of the route. The stop frequently along the journey to permit smokers to grab a quick cigarette or for others to pick up a snack at a fast food restaurant.
Although bus travel may not be suited to everyone’s taste, it affords budget travelers and backpackers the chance to see America in comfort and safety and at a leisurely unhurried pace.

If parents bring up a child with the sole aim of turning the child into a genius, they will cause a disaster. According to several leading educational psychologists, this is one of the biggest mistakes which ambitious parents make. Generally, the child will be only too aware of what his parents expect, and will fail. Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage to children.
However, if parents are not too unrealistic about what they expect their children to do, but are ambitious in a sensible way, the child may succeed in doing very well – especially if the parents are very supportive of their child. Michael Collins is very lucky. He is crazy about music, and his parents help him a lot by taking him to concerts and arranging private piano and violin lessons for him. They even drive him 50 kilometers twice a week for violin lessons. Michael’s mother knows very little about music, but his father plays the trumpet in a large orchestra. However, he never makes Michael enter music competitions if he is unwilling. Winston Smith, Michael’s friend, however, is not so lucky. Both his parents are successful musicians, and they set too high a standard for Winston. They want their son to be as successful as they are and so they enter him for every piano competition held. They are very unhappy when he does not win. Winston is always afraid that he will disappoint his parents and now he always seems quiet and unhappy.
The word “They” in the second paragraph refers to ______.
A. competitions
B.concerts
C.Michael’s parents
D.Michael’s lessons
