   Aspirin's origins go back at least as early as 1758. In that year, Englishman Edward Stone noticed a distinctive bitter flavor in the bark of the willow tree. In the mid-nineteenth century, the United States had tremendous natural resources that could be exploited in order to develop heavy industry. One crucial development in this movement toward industrialization was the growth of the railroads.
