The Tay have the largest population among the ethnic minorities of Vietnam. There are appoximately 1.7 million Tay people living in Vietnam. This group is divided into smaller group such as Ngan, Phen, Tho, Thu Lao and Pa Di. They live in the north of Vietnam, in the provinces of Cao Bang, Lang Son, Bac Kan, Quang Ninh, Ha Giang, Yen Bai and Lao Cai. They inhabit fertile plains and are generally agriculturalists, mainly cultivating rice. They also cultivate maize, and sưeet potato among other things. The Tay ảe closely related to the Nung and the Shaun on the chinese side ò the Vietnamese-Chinese border.
During the year, there are several festivals and celebrations that have different meanings. They are typical farmers. The most famous craft of Tay ethnic group is weaving brocade of original designs.
