The differences between the two cultures Vietnamese and American Weddings in terms of marriage preparation, wedding ceremonies, and receptions.
The first thing I see the differences between the weddings of Vietnam and the weddings of America are the preparations. First, the bride and groom will pick wedding date. In Vietnam, choosing the wedding day is very important for the bride and groom. The bride and groom can’t decide on their wedding day. When the groom’s parents meet bride parents, their parents will pick the wedding day by looking through the Chinese lunar calendar. They believe that the wedding day will bring to happiness and luckiness to new couple. In contrast, the bride and groom in American will pick their wedding day when they are ready, or they probably get married when they have vacation or school is out. Second, the bride and groom need to send the invitations. Both Vietnamese and American have to make a list of guests to invite to their wedding day, but in America, they send the invitations to guests’ houses about two, or three months before the wedding. After that, those guests will send a reply letter to the bride and groom. The bride and groom have to prepare for the number for tables of guests in their wedding day. In Vietnam, they send the invitations to the guests about two weeks before the wedding, and those guests do not need reply to them. The bride and groom do not need to set up tables for guests. Their parents will set up tables for guests. Finally, the bride and groom need to prepare the clothes for the wedding day. In Vietnam, the bride chooses the clothes styles like western and eastern for their weddings. They always wear the traditional clothes for their wedding ceremonies, and they also wear white dresses or colorful dresses for their wedding parties. Unlike Vietnamese, American bride dress more simply in their dress for their wedding
The second difference between Vietnamese weddings and American weddings are wedding ceremonies. First, American wedding ceremonies always involve churches, and they will recite their wedding vows to each other before god, their pastor, and everyone. Then, they will give wedding rings to each other, and they become a couple. Unlike American ceremonies, Vietnamese just have the wedding ceremony at the groom’s house after the groom brings the bride come to the groom’s house. They will not need to recite their wedding vows. They just have given wedding rings for each other, and they become a couple before the ancestral altar of the groom’s family. Second, in America, they usually have three or four groomsmen and bridesmaids follow them in their wedding. In Vietnam, they do not have groomsmen and bridesmaids. Their parents follow them in their wedding. Finally, the Vietnamese usually put money in envelopes at weddings. That is a wedding gift for the bride and groom. The bride and groom in America usually make a list of things they need for their guests to buy.
Finally, the differences between Vietnamese weddings and American weddings are the receptions. First, food is indispensable for weddings. Wedding parties in American are simple. They usually organize buffets in the evening on Saturdays, and they do not have as much food as Vietnamese weddings. They have appetizers, some main dishes, and desserts. In Vietnam, they usually organize the wedding parties in the afternoon on Saturdays at the bride’s house and on Sundays at groom’s house. They always have from ten to twelve foods. Secondly, some drinks are at wedding parties. American weddings usually have a bar at their wedding parties. The guests can buy wine or beer. However, the Vietnamese do not have the habit of buying wine or beer at weddings, so the bride and groom have to prepare wine and beer for the guests. Finally, the gifts are for wedding guests. In American, the bride and groom always prepare their wedding gifts to say “thank you” to the guests such as candies, key chains, candles, etc. Unlike America, the bride and groom in Vietnam do not have prepared the wedding gifts to the guests. They just have say “thank you” to their guests.
In conclusion, weddings Vietnamese and weddings American have some differences. The first are preparation. Americans are not important to choose their wedding day. The bride and groom in America will know of the total of guests going to their weddings through the guests reply to the bride and groom, and the bride clothes in America are simple than Vietnam. Second, American wedding ceremonies are simple than Vietnamese wedding ceremonies. American held their wedding ceremonies at churches. Vietnamese held at the groom’s house. Finally, there are some differences to the receptions about food, drinks, and the wedding gifts between Vietnamese weddings and American weddings. Today, some people in Vietnam want their weddings to be simple like American weddings, but they can still keep some Vietnamese customs and traditions.
