Read the following passage and choose the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions. Current estimates indicate that roughly 83 million people are being added to the world's population every year. Even assuming that fertility levels will continue to decline, the global population is expected to reach 8.6 billion in 2030,9.8 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100, according to the medium-variant projection. The UN Population Division collaborates closely with the agencies, funds, programmes and bodies of the United Nations system in the implementation of the work programme on population and in the follow-up to the International Conference on Population and Development. United Nations missions, national Government offices, United Nations offices, researchers, media representatives and the public regularly consult the Population Division regarding population estimates and projections, and information and analyses on population and development issues. At its thirty-eighth session, the Statistical Commission requested the United Nations Statistics Division and other international agencies to increase their technical assistance to national statistical offices in order to strengthen national capacity for the implementation of the 2010 World Programme on Population and Housing Censuses. In addition, the Commission requested countries to begin implementation of the revised Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses. United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) works with many partners, both within and outside the United Nations system, including Governments, nongovernmental organizations, civil society, faith-based organizations, religious leaders and others, to achieve its mission. To better respond to local needs, UNFPA increasingly devotes resources to country-led efforts, placing emphasis on country-focused and country-led implementation to achieve improved results, at the same time addressing mutual accountability and strengthening harmonization and alignment. UNFPA works to support family planning by: ensuring a steady, reliable supply of quality contraceptives, strengthening national health systems; advocating for policies supportive of family planning; and gathering data to support this work. UNFPA also provides global leadership in increasing access to family planning, by convening partners – including governments - to develop evidence and policies, and by offering programmatic, technical and financial assistance to developing countries.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Tides are the waves caused due to the gravitational pull of the moon and also sun (though its pull is very low). The rise is called high tide and fall is called low tide. This building up and receding of waves happens twice a day and causes enormous movement of water. It is so powerful that it has caused many mishaps and resulted in sinking of ships. Thus tidal energy forms a large source of energy and can be used in some of the coastal areas of the world. Tidal dams are built near shores for this purpose. During high tide, the water flows into the dam and during low tide, the water flows out which result in turning the turbine. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of tidal energy. Tidal energy is an inexhaustible source of energy. It is friendly energy and doesn't produce greenhouse gases. Efficiency of tidal power is far greater as compared to coal, solar or wind energy. Its efficiency is around 80%. Although cost of construction of tidal power is high but maintenance costs are relatively low. Tidal energy doesn't require any kind of fuel to run. The life of tidal energy power plant is very long. However, the cost of construction of tidal power plant is high. There are very few ideal locations for the construction of plant and they too are localized to coastal regions only. Intensity of sea waves is unpredictable and there can be damage to power generation units. Frozen sea, low or weak tides, straight shorelines, low tidal rise or fall are some of the obstructions. This technology is still not effective and more technological advancements are required to make it commercially viable. Usually the places where tidal energy is produced are far away from the places where it is consumed. This transmission is expensive and difficult.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Curling is an event in the Winter Olympics that is played on an ice rink. This event requires a high level of skill and dexterity. The equipment includes stones with handles and brushes to sweep the ice.
Two teams of four compete to get a stone as close as possible to the centre of a series of concentric circles. Hitting the target is more complicated than it seems. The two teams alternate to throw their stones. It is possible to remove a stone from a play area by hitting it with another stone or to use a stone to protect another stone. To assist in the progress of the stone across the ice, the other players will use their brushes to sweep the path in front of the stone so as to influence the direction and distance it can travel.
In sixteenth century Scotland, stones were taken from the bottom of ponds. In North America, the metal-rimmed hubcaps of carriages with handles attached were used. In eighteenth century Canada, there were iron "stones" that weighed more than thirty kilograms. The game would have required more strength in the past than today.
Curling was first introduced as a break from the drudgery of work and a way of alleviating the monotony of the long winters. Curling is catching on today. There is an increase in the number of countries taking part in the Winter Olympics for this event. Ever since the beginning, this game has been enjoyed by both the young and old.

Reading the Following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions. The most common causes of tsunamis are underwater earthquakes. To understand earthquakes, you must first understand plate tectonics. The theory of plate tectonics suggests that the lithosphere, or top layer of the Earth, is made up of a series of huge plates. These plates make up the continents and seafloor. They rest on an underlying viscous layer called the asthenosphere. Think of pie cut into eight slices. The pie crust would be the lithosphere and the hot, sticky pie filling underneath would be the asthenosphere. On the Earth, these plates are constantly in motion, moving along each other at a speed of 1 to 2 inches ( 2.5 – 5 cm) per year. The movement occurs most dramatically along earthquakes and volcanism, which, when they occur at the bottom of the ocean, are two possible sources of tsunamis. When two plates come into contact at a region known as a plate boundary, a heavier plate can slip under a lighter one. This is called subduction. Underwater subduction often leaves enormous “ handprints” in the form of deep ocean trenches along the seafloor. In some cases of subduction, part of the seafloor connected to the lighter plate may “snap up” suddenly due to pressure from the sinking plate. This results in an earthquake. The focus of the the earthquke is the point within the Earth where the rupture first occurs, rock break and the first seismic waves are generated. The epicenter is the point on the seafloor directly about the focus. When this piece of the plate snaps up and sends tons of rock shooting upward with tremendous force, the energy of that force is transferred to the water. The energy pushes the water upward above normal sea level. This is birth of a tsunami. The earthquake that generated the December 26, 2004 tsunami in the Idian Ocean was a 9.0 on the Richter scale – one of the biggest in recorded history. ( Source: Solomon Asea)

The American Red Cross acts as a medium of communication between members of the armed forces and their families. It carries on relief to heal suffering caused by flood, fire, and other disasters, and works out measures for preventing such calamities. The organization is directed by a board of governors consisting of 50 people. Its national headquarters is in Washington, D. C. The organization has eight regional offices, about 2200 local chapters, and 44 regional blood centers.
[2] American Red Cross services are organized into several programs. The disaster services program sets up disaster-preparedness plans and, when disaster occurs, provides emergency care for disaster victims and assistance to help people resume normal living. The blood services program is the largest blood donor service in the world. Blood given by volunteers, is collected, processed, and made available to physicians and hospitals for the use of patients. Clinical research is an integral part of the service. In the international services program, members work with international Red Cross organizations in providing supplies, funds, and disaster specialists for relief in major foreign disasters.
