Winter arrives in Antarctica in March and the Emperor Penguin is one of the few creatures to wait it out on the snow and ice. Most other animals leave the area and don't come back until the next spring. The Emperor, though, which is the largest of the 17 species of penguin found throughout the world, is never far away from the cold, icy Antarctic. It spends its whole life on the ice or in the nearby waters fishing for food. When it gets really cold in the worst part of winter, Emperor Penguins join together in large groups. The members of each group stand close together warming each other with their body heat and take it in turns to stand at the outside of the group, where it is coldest. Most birds breed in springtime, but the Emperors have their babies during the winter months. They keep their large eggs warm by placing them under their belly. The male looks after the egg for 65 days during winter while the female is out at sea fishing. This whole time, the male does without food. After about two months, the females come back. By then, their baby chicks have hatched and they can feed them with food they collected on their fishing trip.
