+) If only ở tương lai

Cách dùng if only: Diễn tả một mong muốn trong tương lai.

Cấu trúc: IF ONLY + S + would/ could + V1 + …

Ví dụ:

• If only I could be in Hanoi next week. (Giá mà tôi ở thể ở Hà Nội vào tuần tới)
• If only I would take a trip to visit you tomorrow. (Giá mà tôi có thể đến thăm bạn vào ngày mai)

+) If only ở hiện tại

Cách dùng: Diễn tả một điều ước không có thực với hiện tại.

Cấu trúc: IF ONLY + S+ V2/-ed + …

Lưu ý: Trong những trường hợp lịch sự, chúng ta sử dụng were chứ không dùng was

Ví dụ:

• If only I were a millionaire, then everyone wouldn’t look down at me. (Nếu tôi là triệu phú, thì mọi người sẽ không khinh thường tôi được)
• If only my mother were here, she would know what to do. (Nếu mẹ tôi có ở đây, bà ấy sẽ biết phải làm thế nào)

+) If only ở quá khứ

Cách dùng: Diễn tả một điều ước, một giả thiết không có thực ở quá khứ

Cấu trúc: IF ONLY + S + had + V3/-ed + …

Ví dụ:

• If only he hadn’t asked his girlfriend for money. (Giá mà anh ta không hỏi mượn bạn gái mình tiền)
• If only I had come there earlier. (Giá mà tôi tới đó sớm hơn chút)

1. If only my brother was not addicted to games.

2. If only my brother did not work lazily.

3. .............you stayed longer.

4. ............. Jim had not gotten lost in the city center.
