Nếu như trước đây người ta hay so sánh đời người như một dòng sông với những khúc quanh thăng trầm mà con người như là sản phẩm của số phận thì ngày nay đã có người ví von nó như một chiếc bánh thời gian mà con người vốn sinh ra khác nhau nên chọn những cách khác nhau để ăn dần chiếc bánh ấy. Cũng như chiếc bánh có nhiều phần, trong đó mỗi phần có hương vị ít nhiều khác nhau, đời người có nhiều giai đoạn với những công việc, trách nhiệm, ước mơ, hoài bão và cả những cung bậc tình cảm khác nhau. Kẻ tham lam, ăn ngấu nghiến chiếc bánh của mình không thương tiếc đến nỗi trong nháy mắt nó chỉ còn là những mẩu vụn trên bàn ăn cuộc đời. Kẻ khảnh chỉ tìm thấy phần khoái khẩu nơi phần nhân bánh, và sau khi thưởng thức xong, họ vứt lại cái vỏ bánh bên đĩa ăn mà không biết rằng cái vỏ bánh chẳng mấy ngon ấy lại cung cấp năng lượng cho cả cuộc đời và họ lại mơ tưởng một cái nhân bánh thứ hai mà không bao giờ có nữa. Cũng có kẻ ăn chậm rãi từng phần vỏ của chiếc bánh và cố để dành phần nhân ngon lành cho lần thưởng thức cuối cùng.
