13 Earth for several million years. Even a comparatively small asteroid could
14 contain more than 2000 million metric tons of serviceable mineral-metal
15 reserves. In additions, some asteroids have a high ice content which
16 means that they could be an economically viable source of freshwater.
17 Large-scale mining of asteroids is possibly the key to solve many of our
18 escalating environmental problems. Any mining venture contains an
19 element of risk, however. Asteroids have traditionally been considered
20 dead perils lurking out in the dark depths of space, bided their time before
21 smashing headlong into our insignificant planet. In order to transplant
22 mining operations from the Earth to the stars, we need to find solutions to
23 extensive safety and logistical problems.
