Danh từ đếm được và danh từ không đếm được

I. Lý Thuyết

1. Danh từ đếm được (Countable nouns) 

Là những danh từ có thể đếm theo số lượng, là từng thực thể riêng biệt, không bị “trộn” với chính nó khi xếp chúng chung lại với nhau

Ex: one cat, two cats, three cats, four boxes

NOTE: Nên chú ý phát âm đầu tiên của danh từ đếm được để thêm a hoặc an nếu danh từ đó đứng 1 mình

Ex: a university, an hour, an ear

Một số danh từ khi ở dạng số nhiều thì ko thêm “s” hay “es” mà thay đổi hoàn toàn
Ex: person – people, child – children, foot – feet, mouse – mice

Một số danh từ đếm được có dạng số ít/ số nhiều như nhau chỉ phân biệt bằng có “a” và không có “a”:

VD: an aircraft/ aircraft; a sheep/ sheep; a fish/ fish.

Danh từ “time” nếu dùng với ý nghĩa chỉ số lần thì trở thành danh từ đếm được

Ex: I play video games three times a week

2. Danh từ không đếm được (Uncountable nouns)

Là những danh từ không thể đếm được bằng mắt thường như danh từ chỉ chất liệu (chất khí, chất lỏng, chất nhão, chất bột…), các danh từ chỉ sự trừu tượng (lời khuyên, lòng tin,..) hay những danh từ chỉ các tập hợp ( như hành lý, vật dụng…)

Ex: rice, advice, information, water, smoke,…

Các danh từ không đếm được này không thể thêm “a”, “an” hay các từ chỉ số lượng như one, two, three mà thường đi kèm với mạo từ “the”, đứng độc lập hoặc đi với một cụm từ chứa đựng nó

Ex: a glass of milk – Không có “a milk”, nhưng “a glass of milk” thì “a” ở đây chỉ số lượng “glass”, tức là một cốc

Danh từ “time” nếu dùng với nghĩa chỉ thời gian thì lại trở thành danh từ không đếm được

Danh từ không đếm được luôn ở dạng số ít

Ex: I have faith in what I see – Perfect/ Ed Sheeran

Anh có lòng tin vào những gì anh thấy

Một số ngoại lệ: một số danh từ không đếm được vẫn có thể đi với "a/an" trong một số trường hợp như sau:

A help:

·A good map would be a help.

A knowledge of:

·She had a good knowledge of life.

A fear/ a relief:

·There is a fear that he maybe met a ghost

·It was a relief to sit down.

A pity/shame/wonder:

·It's a pity that you’ve missed the last bus.

·It's a shame that she give it up to leave.
