A: KIẾN THỨC TRỌNG TÂM

I, TWO-SYLLABLE WORDS (Từ có 2 âm tiết)

1, Đa số danh từ có 2 âm tiết thì trọng âm nhấn vào âm tiết thứ 1

Ex: 'table, 'standard, 'teacher, 'doctor,...

Ngoại lệ: ma'chine, po'lice, ho'tel, mis'take,ad'vice,....

2, Đa số tính từ có 2 âm tiết thì trọng âm nhấn vào âm tiết thứ 1

Ex: 'happy, 'busy, 'funny, 'handsome,...

Ngoại lệ: a'lone, a'mazed,....

3, Đa số động từ có 2 âm tiết thì trọng âm nhấn vào âm tiết thứ 2

Ex: for'get, re'lax, de'cide,...

Ngoại lệ: 'enter, 'happen, 'listen, 'answer, 'visit, 'travel, 'finish, 'realize,...

4, Các động từ có âm tiết cuối chứa vần ''ow'' thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 1

Ex: 'borrow, 'follow

Từ có 2 âm tiết chứa vần ow mà bắt đầu bằng âm A thì nhấn âm 2

5, Danh từ ghép trọng âm thường rơi vào âm tiết thứ 1

'birthday, 'raincoat, 'airport,....

6, Tính từ ghép trọng âm thường rơi vào âm tiết thứ 1

'sea-sick, 'home-sick,...

Tuy nhiên, nếu có từ đầu là tính từ hay trạng từ, hoặc từ thứ 2 là tính từ có đuôi ed thì trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2: well-'done, well-'built, hard-'working,...

7, Động từ ghép trọng âm thường rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2

Ex: over'come, be'come, ...

8, Trạng từ ghép trọng âm thường rơi vào âm tiết thứ 2

Ex: in'side, out'side, ...

9, Đối với số đếm:

- Những từ có đuôi -teen, trọng âm rơi vào chính nó: six'teen

- Những từ có đuôi -ty , trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết liền trước nó: 'sixty

III, MỘT SỐ QUY TẮC KHÁC

1, Đa số những từ có âm tiết bắt đầu bằng chữ A thì trọng tâm rơi vào âm 2

2, Các từ kết thúc bằng đuôi -how, -what, -where ,.... thì trọng âm rơi vào âm đầu

3, Khi thêm các hậu tố -ful, -less, -ness, -able, -al, -ous, -ly, -ment, -ship, -hood, -ive, -er, -or, -ant ,... thì trọng âm chính của từ giữ nguyên
