INVERSION IN ENGLISH (PART II)

 

1. INVERSION WITH NEGATIVE ADVERBS (Đảo ngữ với các trạng từ phủ định)

  1. Các trạng từ phủ định là: Never, Rarely, Seldom, Little, Hardly ever,… (hiếm khi mà).
  2.  Never/ Rarely/ Seldom/ Little/ Hardly ever + auxiliary V + S + V
  3. Examples:
  • Ex1: Never in mid-summer does it snow.
  • Ex2: Hardly ever does she speak in the public.
  • Ex3: Little does she know about Vietnamese history.

        (She knows little about Vietnamese history.)

  1. Hardly had he fallen asleep when he began to dream of far-way lands.

2. INVERSION WITH “NO” PHRASES

  1. At no time: Không bao giờ.
  • Ex: The result of the match was never in doubt.

          =>  At no time/never was the result of the match in doubt.

  1. On no condition: Dù bất kì lí do gì.
  • Ex1: On no condition shall we accept their proposal.
  • Ex2: On no condition should you be late for the exam.
  1. Under/ in no circumstances: Dù trong bất kì hoàn cảnh nào cũng không.
  • Ex: Under/ in no circumstances should you lend him the money.
  1.  For no reason: Chẳng có lí do gì.
  • Ex: For no reason will you play truant.
  1. In no way: Không sao có thể.
  • Ex: In no way could I agree with you.
  1. No longer: Không còn nữa.
  • Ex: No longer does he smoke 20 cigarettes a day.
  1. By no means: Hoàn toàn không.
  • Ex: By no means does he intend to criticize your idea.

  1. The shop can in no way be held responsible for the customers’ lost property.

  1. The restaurant cannot accept animals under any circumstances.

3. INVERSION WITH ADVERBIAL PHRASES OF PLACE/ ORDER

  1. Here/ there……. + V (chia theo chủ ngữ) + S
  2. First/ second/ third……. + V (chia theo chủ ngữ) + S
  3. In front of/ behind/ under/ over/ across……. + N (place)
  4. Away/ down/ in/ off/ out/ round/ up…….

 

=>    Adverbial phrases + Main verb + Subject
