Lưu ý: Đây chỉ là một vài quy tắc đánh trọng âm. Tuy nhiên ngay cả những quy tắc này cũng có rất nhiều ngoại lệ. Vì thế phải nắm chắc cách phát âm và trọng âm của từ khi học các từ mới và tra cứu từ điển khi cảm thấy nghi ngờ.

Trọng âm rơi vào chính các vần sau: sist, cur, vert, test, tain, tract, vent, self.

Với những hậu tố sau thì trọng âm rơi vào chính âm tiết chứa nó: -ee, - eer, -ese, -ique, -esque, -ain.
